( she's very aware that her time in the lab — this lab anyways, was running out. fortunately, the experiments she's working on are nearly complete. it helps when you have prehensile hair and can carry multiple streams of thoughts simultaneously to complete them.
the collapse of shield would have been helpful if it had gotten people off her tail but instead, it expanded the group to basically everyone interested in superhumans. her research is about her biology, about the biology of the others like her. the most recent direction the research had taken involved referencing the terrible experiments done by hydra, but some aspects of them actually appear to be promising. for the moment, she was the only one who could take this on.
she hears someone. based on her calculations, she had more time, and there was no way she could have miscalculated. )
( director rachel duncan was in the middle of assembling the others, the result of secret experimentation held over the course of decades, without any of them knowing. well, cosima was pretty sure duncan knew much more than she was letting on since she was one of them.
for the moment, cosima decided to accept the offer, if only to dig up the secrets behind the move, behind the experiment. despite making huge scientific advances in the epigenetic influences on clone cells and moving up in the scientific community, she somehow didn't see this coming.
and things were about to get even weirder since a legend was apparently on the helicarrier - captain america. for the time being, cosima chooses to wait in the lab, that is, until there aren't so many eyes focused on her. )
[ sarah didn't trust rachel duncan. it wasn't as if she wasn't thankful for her, or her team, for finding her — they'd saved her life, after all. but there was something about the way rachel operated, like she knew so much more than she ever let on, that bothered sarah. she kept it to herself mainly because who was going to mistrust the woman who's position by virtue of existing demanded the highest sort of trust? one didn't just become the director of a national security intelligence agency without having a significant amount of it and for all sarah knew, her suspicions could be entirely misguided.
which is why she continues staying with s.h.i.e.l.d., working with them and for them, on whatever assignments come up. she lets them give her the mantle of captain america, which she'd snorted at because who was she to become that kind of a symbol? ( the last woman to bear that title had been much more deserving of it; after all, beth had been the very model of a good, upstanding citizen until she'd gone on a guaranteed suicide mission ). yet, she'd taken it and made it her own, letting sarah manning quickly become synonymous with captain america.
it's rachel duncan who finds her, as always, to recruit her into the newest mission. only this one, as sarah quickly finds out, is unlike any other — far more secret and with roots dating back to a much earlier time. she hears whispers of experiments in the shadows, but her curiosity compels her to accept duncan's offer anyways.
she ducks out of the helicopter she'd been transported in, giving a few polite smiles as was customary of captain america, before disappearing inside. there's a whole lot of her curiosity that hadn't simply been satisfied by accepting rachel's offer and she's hell-bent on finding out more before the director can realize that she's arrived. her first stop is a lab of some kind, bound to be holding all sorts of secrets and ripe for the snooping — only, as she quickly realizes, there's someone else already present. ]
( she flinches slightly, eyes wide, as she turns her head. ) It's all...right. ( she trails off when she catches sight of the woman's face, taking off her goggles. it wasn't as though she didn't expect the experience to be odd, but it was even more jarring in person. she makes eye contact and nods. ) Captain America.
( a few thoughts form in cosima's mind as she sees her. one of them is definitely holy shit but another is curiosity. curiosity about the project that created them, curiosity about rachel duncan's motives, curiosity about what's going to happen when they're all in one place.
if the stories are accurate, she could trust captain america, but cosima was never one for stories. she was a scientist after all. show, don't tell and all that. )
[ sarah frowns, expression slightly displeased, waving off the other woman. it isn't so much at the presence of cosima, but more about, well -- ]
Call me Sarah. [ please, she thinks, thought it goes unsaid. being referred to by her title came with it's own stifling feeling. ]
I didn't realize anyone was in here. [ not a very smooth response, but it was at least an honest one. a good look at the other woman's face makes her stiffen and she gives cosima a once over. she wants to ask - particularly whether this other person knows more about them, but she holds her tongue for now. ]
( her fingers trace over the bracelet on her wrist, though it's much more than any piece of jewelry, of course. the bracelets on her wrists are able to activate her armor remotely so that no matter where she is, it would reach her within minutes, potentially seconds.
she isn't in the habit of making the same mistake twice.
a moment passes before cosima extends out her hand to the other woman. ) Cosima.
[ the movement doesn't go undetected by sarah, but she can't seem to figure out their significance so she tucks it away for later. for now, she's a ( slightly tense ) smile and a handshake giver to this cosima. ]

Here I thought she just liked all the light. [ director duncan would want to be some sort of great observer though, wouldn't she? she already knew more than she let on and acted as a kind of omnipotent presence within the organization. ]
